What Two Decades Do to the Air Jordan 17's Leather

The Air Jordan XVII’s leather was the argument for its price. Generous smooth panels, dress-shoe detailing, a surface meant to feel crafted rather than manufactured — that is what $200 was buying in February 2002, at least in the sales pitch. So the fair question two decades later is not whether the leather was good. It is whether it is still good, and the answer varies enormously from pair to pair.

This is a review of the upper as an aging material: what happens to it, what that looks like, and what it means for buying.

What the leather was meant to do

Smooth leather in large panels is a demanding choice. It shows everything. A textured or perforated upper hides creasing and scuffs; a broad expanse of smooth finish displays every fold. The XVII committed to it anyway, because the formal register the shoe was reaching for depends on an unbroken surface — the same reason its silhouette works, which we cover in the silhouette review.

One honest caveat that applies to the whole “luxury materials” story: sneaker leather described as premium in 2002 means good mass-produced leather, not the material of hand-welted footwear. The XVII was built in the same factories as its siblings. Its upper is genuinely nicer than the norm for its class, and that is the correct scale to judge it on.

The four things that happen with age

Creasing. Every leather shoe creases across the forefoot where the foot bends, and on a smooth panel the crease is a visible line rather than a texture. On a worn XVII this is the most immediately obvious sign of use, and it is not damage — it is the shoe recording how it was worn. Deep, sharp creases with cracking along the fold are a different matter, and that is where drying comes in.

Drying and hardening. Leather is finished with oils and moisture, and both leave over twenty years, faster in warm or dry storage. The material becomes stiffer, less elastic, and more prone to splitting along an existing fold rather than easing into it. This is the failure mode that turns creasing from cosmetic into structural, and it is also why old XVIIs do not break in — see the break-in post.

Colour and finish change. White leather does not stay white; it drifts warm, and the shift is uneven because different panels and different adjacent materials age at different rates. On the White and College Blue original this shows up as a general warming of the light areas, which is why a pair that looks crisp in a seller’s photograph can look distinctly yellow-cast in hand. Stitching and edge wear. Thread ages and abrades, and panel edges are where a stiffening upper concentrates stress. Popped stitches at a panel seam on an old pair are common and, unlike sole failure, often repairable.

What to look at, and in what order

If you are evaluating an XVII’s upper, the order of importance is roughly:

  1. Cracks along creases. A split in the finish that runs with the forefoot fold is the one cosmetic problem that gets worse every time the shoe is worn. Everything else on this list is more forgiving.
  2. Overall suppleness. Leather that still moves is leather with life in it. A panel that feels like card stock has already dried out, and no conditioning restores that state fully.
  3. Colour uniformity. Not because yellowing is a defect — it is not, and a uniformly warmed pair reads as honest patina — but because patchy discolouration usually indicates uneven storage, moisture, or an attempted whitening treatment.
  4. Seam integrity. Cheap to fix, so weight it least, but note it.
  5. Whether the midfoot cover is present. Not an aging question, but the single most consequential missing-part check on this model.

Notice what is not on the list: gloss. A high-shine surface on an old pair is as likely to be a dressing applied for the photographs as it is to be original finish.

Care, briefly and cautiously

We are not going to write a restoration guide, because doing it properly is a craft and doing it badly on an irreplaceable pair is destructive. Two general points hold regardless.

Storage does more than treatment. Cool, dry, dark, and out of direct sun preserves leather far more effectively than anything you apply to it. Most of the difference between two pairs of the same age is where they sat.

Be conservative with products. Aged finishes react unpredictably. A conditioner that is unremarkable on a modern boot can lift or blotch a twenty-year-old sneaker’s surface, and whitening agents are how good pairs get ruined. If a pair matters to you, test nothing on the pair that matters.

Verdict on the upper

The XVII’s leather was one of the model’s genuine strengths and it remains the part of the shoe most likely to still be pleasant. Uppers age more gracefully than sole units do — the leather goes stiff and mellow while the midsole goes dead and brittle, and it is the sole that ends a shoe’s life. If you are choosing between a pair with honest creasing and a pair with pristine leather over unknown foam, we would take the creases.
